Research Projects

VÚKV a.s. has taken active part in many research projects of the Czech Republic and other European countries, including but not limited to:

Drive of low-deck railway vehicles
Abbreviated title: -
Period: 1999 - 2001
Description: The project dealt with development of drives for low-deck trams. The project included analysis of the technology status and needs of modern vehicles. A concept of individual direct drive per wheel with specially developed electrical power unit was designed. The project was accomplished by manufacture of a sample unit and its testing.
Purpose: Development of a novel wheel drive concept.

Drive adapted to the needs of low-deck vehicle with minimum maintenance demand and minimum noise generation.

Hydrostatic Extrusion Process for Efficient Production of Magnesium Structural Components
Abbreviated title: MAGNEXTRUSCO
Period: 2001 – 2004
Description: The project dealt with improvement of the technology of manufacture of components from magnesium alloys by development of a direct hydrostatic protrusion process.
Purpose: Development of a ductile magnesium alloy with improved material properties.

Development of protrusion technology with increased manufacturing productivity (potential alternative manufacturing procedures).

Selection of optional components for application of this manufacturing process from different fields of industry.

PROGRESS 2002 - New generation of door drive with linear electrical engines, especially for railway vehicles
Abbreviated title: -
Period: 2002 - 2004
Description: The project dealt with application of linear electrical engines as direct drive of door systems of railway vehicles.
Purpose: Development of a new principle of passenger carriage door drive with linear transmission-free electrical power unit, distinguished with a high level of safety and reliability of operation, negligible maintenance demand and power saving.

TRAINSAFE - Pooling Knowledge to Promote Rail Safe
Abbreviated title: TRAINSAFE
Period: 2002 - 2004
Description: The project dealt with safety issues related to railway transport.
Purpose: Increase of the level of standards and regulations for safety in railway transport.

Increase of general railway transport safety.

Utilisation of wide cooperation between manufacturers, operators, suppliers and scientific institutions specialising in railway technology.

Recommendations of innovation and future development trends.

Address and potential integration of new EU Member States into activity in this field.

Research Centre of Railway Rolling Stock
Abbreviated title: VCKV
Period: 2005 - 2009
Description: Research and development programme of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic (MEYS) for Research Centres.
Purpose: Concentration of research capacities in research centres assuring effective knowledge transfer between individual research stages to entities using them.
Research specialisations: Research into material properties and their applications for construction of railway carriages and manufacture of their components.

Research into dynamic strength, usable life and passive safety of railway vehicles constructions and components.

Research into means for assurance of safety of railway vehicles operation.

Research into air flows and aerodynamics of railway vehicles.

Research into noise and vibrations of railway vehicles.

Research into adhesion and drive dynamics of railway vehicles.

Research into gauges of railway vehicles.

New trends in construction of components and whole railway vehicles.

Train Interior Passive Safety for Europe
Abbreviated title: SAFEINTERIORS
Period: 2006 –
Description: The project deals with issues related to passive safety of the interiors of railway vehicles and follows further projects of this kind, namely SAFETRAIN, SAFETRAM and TRAINSAFE.
Purpose: Cooperation of manufacturers, operators, suppliers and research institutions in the area of railway technology within the EU.

Survey of current status of practice and legislation concerning passive safety of interiors of railway vehicles, analysis of traffic accidents and injuries suffered inside railway vehicles.

Identification of the risks of injury of individual parts of human body in the train accident.

On the basis of the above, proposal of complex recommendations for changes inside the vehicles for reduced risk of injury.

Generalisation of the conclusions and recommendation of potential changes in the currently effective legislation.
