The carbodies and underframes are the basic load-bearing parts of railway vehicles providing for firm and stable interconnections of all parts both inside and outside the vehicle. Sufficient dimensioning and suitable construction design determine a number of other parameters – such as passenger safety, total weight, usable properties, appearance, layout of the vehicle etc.
The construction of the carbody is either integral or differential, or a combination of the two. The most frequently used materials include steel (differential structure), mainly for the reason of easy accessibility and repair, and recently also aluminum alloys, especially in the form of protruded profiles (integral structure). And further, even though in smaller amounts, and for the purpose of particular construction units only, alternative materials, like corrosion-resistant or high-strength steel, plastics, composite materials are used.
